Desk Work is Slowly Killing You...

Writer: Karch GajdosKarch Gajdos

Humans were never meant to sit 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week. According to the National Institutes of Health, back pain affects 8 out of 10 people in their lifetime, and it is the leading cause of disability worldwide.

Do you feel low back pain with prolonged periods of sitting? 😫

There’s a good reason why.

Sitting is an extremely passive activity.

When sitting you:

• Take all the force of gravity into your hips and low back.

• Your deep spinal stabilizer muscles become flaccid.

• You assume a forward flexed posture loading your joints and tissues into compromised positions.

This is what the author of Deskbound, Dr. Kelly Starrett suggests to combat this:

1. Reduce optional sitting in your life

2. For every 30 minutes you are deskbound, move for 2 minutes

3. Optimize position and mechanics whenever you can

4. Perform 10 to 15 minutes of Daily Maintenance on your body

Do these things daily and your body will work at its best, long term, to be able to do the things you love.
